A Brexit deal was secured at 1.44pm GMT on Christmas Eve 2020, avoiding a no-deal exit from the transition period with just a week to go, 48 years since Britain joined the then European economic community.
"We have taken back control of our laws and our destiny."
PM Boris Johnson hailed the deal but cautioned "there will be change" in months ahead.

“I know this is a difficult day for some, and to our friends in the UK, I want to say parting is such sweet sorrow but, to use the line from TS Eliot, what we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is often a beginning. So, to all Europeans, I think it is time to leave Brexit behind.”
